GREEN WILLOW. GREEN WILLOW. GREEN WILLOW.
Nice to finally have another album out. We hope you like it. If you need to find it streaming online, we’ve got this handy link for you right here.
Ok, ok. Here.
Just a few initial notes about a few songs:
As some of you might have guessed, it is indeed the case that “Unquiet Grave” was originally supposed to be on Foriegn Skies. The lyrical shift from the traditional song is there for a reason. But at the time we decided that the album didn’t need another slow one. However, it is kind of uncanny how changing just a few words from the original renders this a potent and haunting anti-war ballad.
“Spanish Ladies” features a motley band of singers, volunteers from all over the world who responded to our call for singers. Matt Marcusz, Adam Gee, Jared Alexander, Ian Clement and the SHANTY SIBLINGS Sagan and Sky Harris; y’all are heroes.
We are particularly happy to release a song, “We Shepherds Are The Best of Men”, that (so far as we know) hasn’t been adapted by a modern band in our style. Translation: we finally got to one before the Surfin’ Turnips got to it. The first version I heard sounds like this. Quite a change, huh?
Finally, I have always wanted to do a song like “Twankidillo”. Half of you are going to hate it, it’s fucking weird. But that twangy, careening, frenzied English folk style where the song is so old that the lyrics make little sense? Yeah, that is my jam. And this one has, I believe, our first ever female harmony vocalist on a studio recording, the Magnificent Momo herself. She gives the choruses and verses this spectacular lift, as she did when we sang with the Longest Johns. FECKIN GOOD ON YA MOMO.
There are so many ‘alternative’ versions of these songs I have lined up for you to listen to; vocal-only, instrumental-only, demos, etc. If you wanna hear those, become a paid subscriber right here:
We might make some CDs of this soon, and if the reception is good, maybe some vinyl for you insufferable nerds. But for now, we’ll just pat this little album on the head, give it a gentle shove out of the nest, and whisper the words the great Tom Waits immortalized: “Ok, now go fly away and make daddy some money.”
Great work! The new album is damn awesome!! I love you, you beautiful bastards!
